Reader's Workshop
Students are immersed in text at every turn throughout each day!
Reading workshop is one of our favorite times of the day as we delve into texts to understand story elements and author's craft.
Format of reading workshop:
Interactive read aloud: (10-15 minutes)
I read aloud a text in order to model fluent and expressive reading as well as critical thinking. During the reading, students have the opportunity to share their thinking and predictions with the class and partners.
Right now, we are enjoying The Candymakers, by Wendy Mass
Minilesson: 5-10 minutes
I explicitly model and teach the skill that readers will practice that day.
Guided Practice: 10 minutes
Students have the chance to try the activity or skill with me in order to demonstrate understanding before trying it independently.
Independent Practice: 30 minutes
Students apply and practice the new skill in their own independent reading books.
During this time, I have the opportunity to confer with students to ensure that they are comprehending their texts and to offer specific teaching to allow individual readers to achieve personal reading success.
Share: 5 minutes
